Bob Weatherwax: The Legacy of Lassie
Bob Weatherwax, a renowned Hollywood dog trainer, dedicated his life to continuing his father’s illustrious legacy of breeding and training collies to embody the beloved character of Lassie. This resourceful and heroic canine captivated audiences by crossing flooded rivers, confronting bears, and winning the hearts of countless children around the world. Sadly, Bob Weatherwax passed away on August 15 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, at the age of 83. His family reported that his death, occurring at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility, was attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Taking the reins as Lassie’s primary trainer in 1985 after the passing of his father, Rudd Weatherwax, Bob became the custodian of a cherished legacy. Rudd Weatherwax’s collie, Pal, had previously starred in the iconic 1943 film “Lassie Come Home,” sharing the screen with Hollywood legends Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. The film, along with the beloved “Lassie” television series that aired on CBS and in syndication from 1954 to 1973, cemented Lassie’s status as a cultural icon.
As his father’s apprentice, Bob Weatherwax mastered the multifaceted roles essential for managing the Lassie brand. He became a talent agent, a canine geneticist, and an acting coach, all of which were crucial in ensuring that Lassie was treated as a true Hollywood star. This high standard was initially established by Louis B. Mayer, one of the founders of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Following the premiere of “Lassie Come Home,” Mr. Mayer famously contacted his friend Howard Hughes, who owned Trans World Airlines, requesting special accommodations for Lassie. It was arranged that Lassie would fly with passengers rather than being relegated to the cargo hold, enjoying the luxuries of first class.
Bob Weatherwax fully embraced his role as a talent manager, relishing the unique experiences that came with traveling alongside a celebrity. His dedication to maintaining the grandeur of the Lassie legacy ensured that the spirit of this iconic canine continued to shine brightly in the hearts of fans everywhere.
