Emmys 2023: A Celebration of Television

It has been just eight months since the strike-delayed Emmys ceremony took place in January, and now the television industry is gearing up to celebrate itself once more. For the first time in the 75-year history of the Emmys, the awards show will occur twice within the same calendar year. Here’s everything you need to know to tune in this Sunday:

What time does the show start?

The ceremony is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Pacific) and will be held at the iconic Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Unlike the Oscars, the Emmys are known for their punctuality, typically wrapping up in about three hours.

Where can I watch?

The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC, making it easy for anyone with access to network television to catch the action. Online streaming options are a bit more complex. Various streaming services, such as YouTube TV and Fubo, offer access to ABC, but a subscription to these platforms is required. For those who prefer to stream later, the Emmys will eventually be available on Hulu, although with a significant delay; the ceremony won’t be accessible until Monday.

What’s eligible?

This year’s nominees feature shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. This is why the second season of the critically acclaimed “The Bear,” which debuted last year, is up for awards at this event, rather than the third season, which premiered just three months ago. Leading the pack in nominations are “Shogun” with 25 nominations and “The Bear” with 23.

Who’s hosting?

The ceremony will be hosted by the dynamic father-and-son duo of Dan and Eugene Levy, the creative minds behind the beloved series “Schitt’s Creek.” The Levys are no strangers to award shows, having made a memorable mark during the Emmys in September 2020, which was held virtually due to the pandemic. Dan Levy notably became the first performer to win four Emmys during a prime-time telecast for his exceptional work in writing, directing, best supporting actor, and best comedy.

When is the red carpet?

The excitement begins earlier in the day with red carpet coverage. The cable network E! will air its red carpet show, starting at 6 p.m. Eastern Time, hosted by the talented Laverne Cox, comedian Heather McMahan, and E! host Keltie Knight. ABC will also feature its own red carpet event, commencing at 7 p.m. Eastern, hosted by veteran anchor Robin Roberts alongside ABC News correspondent Will Reeve. Don’t miss out on the glamour and style as stars arrive for this prestigious event.
