End of Physical Exit Tax Stamps Starting January 2025
A new draft regulation on the Exit Tax for international travel has been published on the official website of the Revenue Administration (GİB), inviting public feedback.
The new framework has been designed with a focus on paper-saving measures and green transition efforts.
Under the current system, travelers pay the Exit Tax before leaving the country at various locations, including tax offices, customs offices, authorized banks, PTT counters, and certain other financial institutions, in exchange for a paper receipt. Payments can also be made online through the GİB’s Digital Tax Office, mobile applications, or internet banking services from authorized banks.
However, starting from January 1, 2025, the option to pay the Exit Tax using the “paper exit tax stamp” will be eliminated. Instead, the tax will need to be paid digitally.
For those who have already purchased Exit Tax stamps before the end of 2024 (based on the current rate of 500 Turkish Lira), these stamps will remain valid until January 10, 2025. After this date, the practice of issuing paper exit tax stamps at airports and ports will come to an end.
With this reform, electronic payments will be monitored through the system, allowing the Exit Tax to be processed and recorded automatically as part of the departure procedure.
This change aims to streamline the payment process, contribute to environmental sustainability, and ensure greater transparency and efficiency in tax collection.
