In 2015, global leaders set bold goals to improve health, employment, nutrition, and ensure access to affordable and clean energy for all by 2030. But now, as the UN and others evaluate progress, it’s clear these goals are becoming harder to reach. The reason? Spreading resources across so many areas has limited real impact.

As world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly, it’s time to rethink the approach. Energy access is not just one goal among many—it is the foundation for all other progress. Access to electricity directly affects whether people can find jobs, stay healthy, and improve their quality of life. Without it, no other improvements can take root.

The numbers are staggering: Nearly 700 million people still live without any electricity, while another 3.1 billion don’t have reliable access. If we want to make real progress on poverty and development, we must prioritize electrification—especially clean, sustainable energy solutions.

Ten years ago, as optimism surged about reducing poverty and tackling climate change, there was a clear sense that global collaboration could turn the tide. Foreign investments in developing nations were at an all-time high, reaching $225 billion by 2014, and the global community believed that lifting all boats was within reach. But today, financial resources are too dispersed across competing goals, and the focus has blurred.

What’s the solution? Instead of treating energy as just another box to check, leaders need to focus on it as the linchpin for everything else. With reliable, clean energy, individuals can access better healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, improving their overall well-being.

My personal take? Energy is the great equalizer. Without it, no other progress is possible. If we truly want to end poverty and create lasting change, the global community must channel its efforts into expanding clean energy access. Prioritize energy, and the rest will follow.
