The social media platform X has been officially banned in Brazil, and the details emerging suggest severe penalties for those who defy the ban. This includes hefty fines for citizens attempting to access the platform.
Why Did Brazil Ban the X Platform? Fines for VPN Access
Countries continue to impose bans on social media platforms, and now Brazil has joined the list by banning X. But why? Following a coup attempt in the country, the Brazilian Supreme Court requested specific information from X about accounts related to the coup and demanded the closure of certain accounts. Instead of complying, Elon Musk opted to close the platform’s office in Brazil.
In response, the Brazilian Supreme Court gave X 24 hours to reopen its office in Brazil. When X failed to comply, the court issued a shutdown order for the platform.
A particularly troubling detail about Brazil’s ban on X is that VPN access to the platform is also prohibited. While technically challenging to enforce, the Brazilian government is introducing a deterrent by imposing a staggering fine of $8,874 (approximately 302,000 TL) on anyone caught accessing X via VPN.
Personal Take:
Brazil’s decision to ban X, and the severe penalties associated with it, underscore the increasing tension between governments and social media platforms. The fine for VPN access is particularly striking, raising questions about the balance between digital freedom and national security. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and whether other countries might follow Brazil’s lead. What are your thoughts on this ban? Do you think such measures are justified?
